Janke Shines In Goal, Lions Advance
Two years in a row the Lions season ended with an overtime loss to Oakridge in the district tournament so when Lesley Rivera-Zamarron fired in the tying goal in the second half and regulation ended in a 1-1 tie it might have been deja vu all over again as Yogi Berra once said so eloquently.
Not this time.
After 2 scoreless overtimes the match went to a shootout and the girls from Newaygo prevailed 3-2 to move on in District play and avenge an early season loss.
Goalkeeper extraordinaire Jenna Janke who will be bringing her net play to Muskegon Community College this fall made an incredible 36 saves in the match.
“This was a fun one,” said Lion Coach Jason Long. “The girls kept playing hard, battling right to the end. They continued playing the next 5 minutes. I'm proud of their effort and character they displayed. Oakridge is a quality team and it was great to finally get a win against them.”
Trailing 2-0 in the shootout Newaygo got three in a row to ice the win as Bryanna Richardson, Kelsi Auw, and Tahya Briggs each found the back of the net.
The Lions tournament road doesn’t get any easier with the 16-1 Tri County Vikings on the schedule for a 5:45pm match at Orchard View on Friday. The game will be preceded by th Grant/Lakeview match at 4pm. The winners of those game will play for the District crown Saturday at 3pm
