An exciting season came to an end on Tuesday evening for the Grant Volleyball team, falling short of a win against Buchanan High School in the MHSAA Class B State Tournament. Game scores were 24-26, 14-25, and 17-25.
“I have truly been blessed to coach a group of young ladies with class, character, integrity, great work ethic, and who understand how to be great teammates. It has been a great season,” said Coach Tricia Schuitema after the match.
Grant’s defensive leaders in the match were...
...Ashley Herin with 20 digs, and Olivia Keelean, Taylor Wegener, and Laura Bouwkamp with 9 digs each. Kylie Patton and Sierra Schuitema led in their front row defense with solid blocks in the match. Offensively, setter Schuitema had 20 assists and Bouwkamp and Patton led in kills.
Two student-athletes from the talented Grant team will go on to play at the collegiate level next year with seniors Sierra Schuitema and Laura Bouwkamp signing letters of intent last week.
Schuitema will be attending Cedarville University in Ohio. Cedarville is a private, Christian university that competes in the NCAA Division 2 Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Bouwkamp will be playing at Davenport University in the fall. Davenport is a private university located in Grand Rapids and has recently been accepted into the NCAA Division 2 membership process and will compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference beginning in 2017-2018.
Coach Schuitema shared, “These two young ladies are tremendously hard workers, they aspire to be awesome at everything they do, they are wonderful leaders, and they have great integrity and character. I've truly been blessed to have the opportunity to coach them.”
