Fremont Boys Track: The Alma College Scottie Classic
By Coach Somers
Over 30 teams competed in 4 divisions. It made for a very long day. We arrived at the meet at 8:30 am and left at 8:30 pm. There were 16 boys heats of the 100 and 5 heats of the boys mile. That made for a logistical problem for the athletes about when to warm up. I thought the boys handled it very well and had a solid meet.
The meet was run well by the organizers, and they were helpful in allowing the athletes to continue their warm-up after checking in. Our biggest improvements were in the distance events, but Ian Paige (11th) had a breakthrough throw in the disc topping his PR by over 6 feet.
Colton Christoffersen (10th) turned in a stellar performance in 3200 run. As the top seed in his heat (there were 3 heats), Colton was a little worried about living up to his seeding. The race went out very fast and Colton let the leaders go and ran his own race. In the second mile he started to gradually pick off the runners who were ahead of him. Colton ended up finishing 4th in his heat, but ran his best 3200 ever. It was also the best race I have seen him run.
Another great race was our 4x400 relay. The team of Ryan Geeting, Cole Hamilton, Corbin Wolfsen and Matthew Zerfas ran 3:40 to cut 7 seconds off our season’s best time.
Only the top 3 in each event were awarded medals.
Medal winners were
3200 Relay - Sam Kaastra, Ben Schmidt, Cole Hamilton, Matthew Zerfas - 2nd
800 Run - Matthew Zerfas - 2nd
Long Jump - Ryan Geeting - 3rd
