By Alexis Mercer
Newaygo held back Oakridge with a 1-0 lead for 70 minutes and 10 seconds of the game, but the Eagles pulled out the win in overtime to advance in the District soccer tournament. With the sun beating down on the field, the teams battled back and forth for the first 22 minutes of the game. ...the shot, but Angelica Riggs-Coronado was ready for the quick shot and goal to back her up with 17:43 left in the first half.
Oakridge came out aggressively in the second half and once again controlled the ball for most of the minutes. Newaygo's defense held strong until the visitors brought the ball up the side of the field, taking a nice cross with Lanessa Meyers capitalizing on the time spent near the goal to send a solid shot in to tie the game.
Regulation time ended with a score of 1-1.
Overtime was an intense clash of midfield talent but with 2:18 left in the first overtime Alexis Flores scored to send the Eagles to Lakeview on Thursday to face the Wildcats.
