Crusaders Crush Panthers
N3 Sports Team
The Panthers went up against the juggernaut known as the Muskegon Catholic Central Crusaders a team bringing a 13 game winning streak and three straight state championships into the game.
“We came out swinging and ready for battle and we were only down 7-0 at the end of the first quarter,” said Panther Head Coach Doug Bolles. “Just over eight minutes remaining in the second quarter...
...things started to change. We made a few mistakes and with the type of team MCC is you can't do that.”
MCC went on to post a 48-7 win and take the chances for postseason play out of the Panther’s hands. Teams can make the playoffs with 5 wins but there are many factors involved.
“They took full advantage. When they see an opportunity they're like piranhas with blood in the water, totally capitalizing on every miscue that you make.
“Senior Gage Balkema had an outstanding game defensively. He was all over the field making play after play. Gage’s leadership has been there all season. He's quiet by nature, but leads by example. I’m really proud of his effort not just tonight but the whole year.
“We were still feeling the after effects a little from the crushing loss a week ago to Kent City and you just can't do that against any team let alone the three time defending state champs.
“I’m still very proud of my guys and we come home Friday to play Shelby with a chance to finish with a winning season, We’re not where we thought we'd be, but such is life sometimes. You have to face adversity and hopefully it will make us stronger.”
