Baseball- Francisco, Geers Pace Tiger Sweep
Grant 5-7 Reed City 4-4
The Tigers were trailing Reed City 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Ian Francisco laced a base hit sending two teammates home and giving Grant the walk-off win in the opener of a twinbill with the Coyotes.
Tommy Kelley picked up the win in relief having taken over for Spencer Naffziger in the top of the 7th. Naffziger went 6 innings while giving up a pair of runs and striking out 8. for Grant Tigers .
Casey Geers went 3-3 for the Tigers with Gabe Castro, Francisco, and Naffziger collecting 2 hit apiece.
"We were very lucky to escape with a win,” said Coach Kurt Rider. “Up until our last at bat in the seventh inning we ...
...were trying hard to give the game away. We had 6 defensive errors and even some base running mistakes that took us out of a possible big third inning."
"All of our batters in the 7th inning had great at bats. Tyler Naffziger and Casey Geers each drew 1 out walks and then Spencer had a big hit to put us down one. Chase Lowry battled for a 9 pitch at bat to draw another huge walk. Then in steps Ian to hit the game winning line drive. I am proud of the way the boys kept fighting despite how some areas of the game went."
In the second game the Tigers built an early lead then withstood a 4 run rally by Reed City to earn the sweep.
Grant got on the board with a run-scoring single by Francisco then added to their lead with more runs in the third as Francisco, Zach VanderWeide and Tommy Kelley recorded hits.
Casey Geers earned the win tossing six innings and giving up four runs on five hits while striking out seven. Geers did not allow a single free pass to the Coyotes.
"Casey pitched a heck of a game for us,”said Coach Rider .”Not only that but he made some outstanding heads up plays on a couple bunts and ground balls hit back at him."
Naffziger and Francisco each drove in a pair runs for the Tigers.
