Newaygo Track Achieving Success
The Lion track teams finished off a productive week where both defeated CSAA conference foes Fremont and Reed City by each finishing 3rd place at Lakeview. The boys team collected 29 medals on the day while the girls brought in 20.
Coaches Thomasma and Wright expressed pride in the accomplishments of the team.

Indians Sweet Comeback Fuels Sweep of Morley Stanwood
On Friday night, the Lady Indians would’ve made Yogi Berra proud in that “It’s never over until it’s over”.
Trailing 12-3 headed into the bottom of the 7th, the girls sent 13 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs to come away with the win. Elexis Plotts had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBI’s, Hallie Schulz had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s, Hannah Brown had 3 hits including a pair of doubles, Olivia Bowman and Chloe Stevens each had 2 hits with a double, while Allison Schulz and Madison Smith collected a pair of hits apiece.
Hallie Schulz kept the Mohawks off balance in the 2nd game and the bats got going much earlier with a 5 run 5th for a 9-0 win. Olivia Bowman had a double and a triple and 3 RBI’s, Hallie Schulz had 3 hits, Chloe Stevens had 2 hits with a 2B and 2 RBI’s, Madison Smith had 2 hits and Hannah Brown doubled.
A Dozen Medals For Fremont Girls Track
“We had good competition Friday at the Mason County Central Optimist Invite.’” said Coach Leslie Hamilton. “
The girls finished 10th out of 12 schools, but they worked hard and earned 12 medals and 14 girls beat their season Personal Record (PR).

Pack Shuts Out Shelby 4-0
Bre Harris started the scoring off an assist from Natalie Jamieson just 7 minutes into the match to put the Pack up one then 4 minutes later Kaitlynn Luker added a tally from Samantha Schmidt giving Fremont the 2-0 lead that would stand to intermission.
The second half saw Stephanie Heger take a cross from Alena Christensen to push the score to 3-0 and the final goal of the evening was recorded by Jewel Daniels on a flicked ball from Luker.
Fremont outshot the Tigers of Shelby 15-1. Brooke James made 11 saves for Shelby and Abby Pell denied the only shot she faced as the Pack put together a strong defensive showing.
White Cloud Takes Two From Lions
In the first game, the Cloud was led by Elexis Plotts with a double and 3 RBI’s, followed by Megan Sutherland with a double and a pair of RBI’s and Hallie and Allison Schulz with 2 hits each. Selena Robeck got the win on the slab.
Plotts led the way in the 2nd game as well with a bases loaded single that scored 3. Hannah Brown had 2 hits including a 2-run HR, while Chloe Stevens had a double and 2 RBI’s and Allison Schulz added a single and collected 2 RBI’s.
“That was a very scrappy and determined Newaygo team,” said Indian Coach Don Barnhard. “ Although the final score read 13 – 9 , it felt more like we survived than won as Newaygo kept coming back.”
Tiger Tennis Nets Win
The Tiger netters rolled past Manistee 7-1 sweeping the singles behind stellar performances by Emerson Cole, Olivia Keelean,Jill Arends and Kirstyn Throop.
The #4 doubles team of Miriam Delgado and Maddie Koopman continued their success on the court moving to 10-2 on the season with their win.
Brooklyn Presler and Kathryn Stong were perfect in their 6-0 6-0 win at #3 doubles while Seniors Isabel Jaimes and Shannon Roossinck came back from a set down to win the second set in a tiebreaker and win the 3rd set match tiebreak 10-6 in a 2 hour marathon battle.
Elvira Cruz and Kaitlyn Pascoe fought back as well at #2 doubles winning the second set 11-9 in a tiebreaker.
The Tigers travel to Whitehall Monday to face the Vikings.

Packers Fight Off Coyotes For 4-1 Win
When the Packers arrived in Coyote Country they found poor field conditions and gusting winds and knew this match was going to be a struggle from the beginning.
Neither team offered much of an attack during the first half until Bre Harris broke the scoreless game with 4 minutes remaining in the half to give Fremont the 1-0 lead they would hold at intermission.
Just two minutes into the second half Harris scored again off an assist from Samantha Schmidt. Reed City's Brooke Voleker responded 13 minutes later and closed the gap to 2-1 but with twenty minutes to play in the game Fremont junior Holly Kortge finished a crossed ball from Natalie Jamieson. Jamieson also assisted on the final goal of the match setting up Alena Christensen to end the scoring at 4-1.
Fremont outshot Reed City 7-4. Abby Pell from Fremont grabbed 3 saves and Katelin Reed from Reed City made 3 saves as well. Fremont is currently 5-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Reed City is 1-5 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Tigers Clip Eagles 9-0
The Grant defense only allowed the Kent City Eagles 4 shots on goal and 4 Grant players scored a total of 9 goals in the win. Freshman Delaney Cronk scored twice, Sophomore Nikki Tellkamp scored 3 and added an assist, Junior Mallory Cronk scored 2 with an assist and Senior Halley Robinson rounded out the scoring with 2 goals and an assist. Sophomore Kim Settlemyre led the defense with 8 steals.

Early Slam By VanderWeide Helps Tigers Tame Spartans
Zach VanderWeide came to bat in the first inning with the bases full and delivered with a drive that cleared the left field fence for a grand slam to stake Grant to an early lead.

Pack Holds Off Wildcats 6-4
Monday afternoon saw a wild match between the Packers of Fremont and the Wildcats of Lakeview. Fremont started off the scoring when Natalie Jamison intercepted the goal kick and rocketed a shot off the post then followed it in for the tally.
Just five minutes later the Wildcat's Jordan Hart scored from 30 out on a set play. The 1-1 score stood until intermission.

The Lions will be led on the sidelines by a veteran head coach whose resume includes 5 straight playoff appearances according to the information sent out Monday by the school:

Coach Van Essen was at Kenowa Hills High School as the head football coach since 2003 and will bring an extensive amount of knowledge and excitement to our football program and Newaygo Public Schools.
