Andrew Houghton From Tri-County Scores Big!
By N3 Sports Team
It was a magical moment for everyone who attended the Varsity Basketball game at Tri-County High School on Friday evening. Andrew Houghton, a senior for the Vikings, had his chance to shine on Senior Night.
Houghton, who has been the manager for the team for the Vikings the last two years, was asked by Coach Delamater and Athletic Director Phil Butler if he might be interested in playing in the final home game of the season.
"No way," he said. "I am the 'Hydration Specialist,' and I'm good at my job," Houghton said. This was the title he came up with for his role on the team. But Coach Delamater thought that the game Friday might provide an opportunity for Andrew to at least step out on the floor, so he didn't give up.
Butler and Delamater talked to him a few more times, even going to the gym to shoot hoops with him to get him thinking about the idea. Then on Thursday Butler asked him to try on a jersey to see how it felt. After that, Houghton was sold.
So he suited up on Friday and was anxiously awaiting his turn.
Peter Zerfas, Fremont's Head Coach, talked to Coach Delamater before the game. They agreed that if there was an opportunity for Houghton to play even for the last minute, they would give it a shot.
Instead of a minute, Houghton got to check in with just over 2 minutes on the clock. He not only got in the game, but had the opportunity to shoot multiple shots. He scored more than once, including a buzzer-beater at the end.
The entire gym, including the Fremont Packers team and fans, all erupted in cheers for Houghton.
Phil Butler said about the game that "Fremont and Tri-County both were amazing. Coach Zerfas was great, and his players were absolutely outstanding in their sportsmanship. Our guys, too. They were genuinely excited for him."
This is what high school athletics is all about.
