The Tigers basketball season came to an end Monday night in Sparta when a talented Cougar team took an early lead then kept a stranglehold on Grant's offense to advance to Wednesday’s Regional final against Spring Lake.
10th ranked GRCC led by 9 after the first quarter pouring in 23 points to Grants 14 then stretched their lead to a commanding 17 point advantage by intermission. Hopes for a comeback in the second half fell short as...
...the Cougars kept the pressure on to enter the final frame up by 25.
"Catholic Central is loaded with big time size," said Grant Coach Matt McCorkle. "We just got out-manned on the glass. Catholic Central won the rebound battle and that was the story of the game."
"With Godwin Heights losing, Class B is up for grabs and I wouldn't be surprised to see Catholic Central at the Breslin Center next week."
As for the team he guided through his first season on the Tiger bench?
"Great group of guys, My seniors were special and we are all going to miss them."
Spencer Naffziger who put together an outstanding senior season led the Tigers in scoring with a dozen points in his final game while freshman Carter Chase who looks to be taking the floor for Grant for three more years added 9.
The Tigers began the season with a 2-3 record then ran off 16 wins in their next 18 games including a second place finish in the Gold and a second consecutive District title before the loss to the Cougars.
