Lions Go 2-1,2-2 In Opening Weekend
By Alexis Mercer
The Newaygo Lions Varsity Volleyball Team started with a whirlwind of games both Friday, August 19 in a home quad and then Saturday, August 20 at the Holton Invitational.
Starting on Friday night, the Lions battled in three separate games at the home quad against Pentwater, Cedar Springs and Orchard View. In the first game, Newaygo defeated Orchard View 25-13, 25-19. They quickly followed it up with...
...another win against Cedar Springs with scores of 25-18, 25-15. Eventually the Lady Lions were defeated by a scrappy Pentwater team in a battle of three sets, with scores of 18-25, 25-23 and 6-15. Poor serve reception resulted in the Lions digging themselves into an 0-7 hole to start the third. Once in that deep, they were unable to dig out.
A quick turnaround and the Lions were in Holton playing against Hesperia in the first pool play match on Saturday morning. Some mental mistakes and unforced errors plagued the team in the first set; resulting in a 17-25 loss. But they quickly regained their composure and came out on top in set two 25-23. They continued with this great momentum and ended up winning the third set 15-10.
Play continued in the pool, where the Lions lost in two sets to West Michigan Christian 17-25, 15-25. For the third game of the morning, Newaygo rallied and defeated Wyoming Lee 25-11, 25-21 to claim the number two spot in the pool. This resulted in the team facing Muskegon Oakridge, the number one ranked team from the opposite pool. The back row worked hard and came up with some spectacular digs, but the front row struggled to get blocks against the hard outside hitting, and the Lions bowed out in the semi-final match, losing 17-25,16-25.
Coach Beth duChemin was very pleased with the positive start to the season.
“The girls are all hard working and determined,” she stated. “We have more offensive threats than we've had in the past, and this team shows more cohesiveness on the court. I'm very excited for this season! Go, Lions!!”
The Varsity Volleyball Team next plays on Tuesday, August 23 at the Mason County Central Invitational and at home on Tuesday, September 6 against Reed City High School.
