Boys: Packers Fight Back But Fall Short
Montague 50 Fremont 43
The Wildcats have blasted through their schedule since an opening loss to Spring Lake posting four straight convincing wins and with a Thursday matchup with long time rival Whitehall looming the hosts wanted to keep that momentum going.
Montague is long on experience and talent and they put it on display early running to a quick 10-0 lead in the first 3 minutes before Packer Head Coach Pete Zerfas signaled for a time out to settle his players down.
It proved to be successful as the Packers shook off the early minutes to fight their way back into the game. They pulled within 3 and...
...held possession with under a minute in the half and an opportunity to inch closer or even go to intermission tired but an errant shot led to a triple in transition and the ‘Cats took a 6 point advantage to the locker room.
Coming out of the break hot again the hosts canned a quick 4 points to go up 10 but the Packers once again steadied the ship and got back to within 3 with 3 minutes left and the ball in their hands. This time a missed layup ended up being an easy layup at the other end of the court giving Montague a 5 point lead and Fremont could not close the gap.
Sam Kaastra finished with 214 points and 15 boards while Ryan Geeting hit for a team high 16 points while nabbing 8 steals on defense.
The Pack is now 4-3, 2-1 and will return to conference play Friday at home to face a familiar rival for the first time in basketball as a member of the CSAA Gold.
Tuesday’s cancelled contest against Central Montcalm has been rescheduled to February 7th at home.
